1960's

Our story began in the late 1960s, when our founder started handcrafting candles in her kitchen before selling them at Portobello Market.

 

1970's

From Portobello to a permanent location, with organic growth and a gap in the market apparent the first location was established in Camden in 1971 with the start of The Candle Shop.

The new shop quickly attracted a loyal and growing customer base.

 During its first year, the UK was affected by the 1972 miners' strike and due to the nationwide power cuts customers flocked to The Candle Shop for candles, with the queues becoming so notable that they were even filmed and featured on television. 

 

1980's

After ten successful years in Camden, the business relocated to Covent Garden, then a thriving hub of independent retailers, where it remained for the next 22 years.

 

 

Year on year the business thrived operating from its Covent Garden location solely selling from the shop direct to consumer, which led to the addition of our New Kings Road location in 1988 which we still welcome customers into, to this day. 

 

2000's

A new millennial saw the start of the booming internet.  Embracing the digital age Candles On The Web was launched, our first online store, making our products accessible to customers across the UK. More than two decades later, it remains our retail website, operating alongside our wholesale business, Covent Garden Candles.

 

Present Day 

Today, we remain a proudly independent, second-generation family business. While much has changed over the decades, our commitment to maintaining high quality products, personal service and supplying beautiful candles has remained exactly the same.
